About Total Disc Replacement
Total disc replacement (TDR) surgery is a modern alternative to spinal fusion surgery aimed at treating symptomatic degenerative disc disease (DDD). This procedure is designed to relieve pain and maintain spinal motion.
Comparing TDR and Spinal Fusion:
- Pain Management: Both procedures involve removing the pain-generating disc and restoring disc height.
- Stabilization: For spinal fusion, the segment is stabilized using implants, plates, and/or rods and screws, often with bone grafts to promote vertebral fusion.
- Motion Maintenance: In TDR, an implant permitting motion is placed in the disc space, allowing the spine to maintain more natural mechanics. This helps in preserving sagittal balance and may slow down degeneration in adjacent spine levels.
Both treatments are generally effective for pain relief, but preserving motion through TDR may offer additional benefits over spinal fusion.
