Dr. Alvis’s journey into the medical field began in Shelby County, Alabama, where he grew up on a farm and graduated from Berry High School (now Hoover High School). He attended Auburn University from 1977 to 1982, minoring in mathematics and languages, specifically Russian and sign language (AMSL), while also excelling in physical chemistry and pharmacokinetics.
Educational Background
Dr. Alvis earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1982 from Auburn University. He then pursued a graduate program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB), focusing on the mathematical modeling of biological systems and pharmacokinetics. During his time at UAB, Dr. Alvis worked with Dr. Jerry Reves on developing computer-controlled narcotic dosing during cardiac surgery, which eventually led to his Master’s thesis.
Despite his success in engineering, Dr. Alvis found his true calling in medicine, guided by his mentor Dr. Reves. He attended the University of South Alabama Medical School from 1984 to 1988, during which he also completed rotations at Duke University and in Brisbane, Australia.

After medical school, Dr. Alvis did his general surgery internship at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Initially aspiring to be a general surgeon, he soon became captivated by neurosurgery. This passion led him to complete a neurosurgery residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, followed by a Spine Fellowship at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.
